Obituary of Melvin J Silver
Melvin Silverman, an attorney who served as Norwalk city councilman and Norwalk PTA Council president, died on August 11. The cause was complications from heart disease. Melvin J. Silverman was born in Norwich in 1939, one of seven children. He graduated from Norwich Free Academy, received a degree from UConn in mathematics, and then received a law degree from the UConn Law School. He married Beverly Aaron in 1962, and then served as a lieutenant in the army, before moving to Westport and then Norwalk to begin work as a lawyer. He eventually started his own firm and argued several cases in Connecticut Supreme Court. He became active in Norwalk politics in the 1970s, winning a seat as a councilman in 1976, after serving as president of the PTA Council. He also helped found Small Fry little league baseball. He and his family moved to Wilton and then Fairfield. He retired from law practice in 1994, after a major heart attack. During retirement, he taught classes at Norwalk Community College, served as a mediator in the Connecticut justice system and volunteered for AARP to help seniors with tax preparation. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Jonathan, Jason and Joel; a daughter, Alba; and two grandchildren, Noah and Theo. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcomed at Congregation B'nai Israel in Bridgeport, St. Vincent's Regional Heart and Vascular Center in Bridgeport or the Connecticut Food Bank.
