Obituary of Edward J. Hurley

Edward James Hurley died on July 15, 2014 at Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, CT after a courageous battle against esophageal cancer. A true Jersey boy, Mr. Hurley was born on September 1, 1947 in Jersey City to Edward A. and Veronica Hurley. He grew up in Carteret, NJ. He attended St. Benedict's Preparatory School in Newark, NJ and St. Peter's College in Jersey City, NJ. He spoke very fondly about his education at St. Benedict's. Mr. Hurley started his career in accounting and finance, but he spent most of his career working in the broadcast industry. After working at Columbia Pictures, he moved to the the Tribune Corporation where he was the Business Manager of the radio station CD 101.9. In 1992, he moved with his family to Connecticut in order to become the CFO of a radio station management enterprise, Independence Broadcasting, of which he ultimately became the CEO. He later served as CFO of Apex Broadcasting, another radio enterprise. However, with deregulation, the industry became less entrepreneurial and he needed to reinvent himself. Mr. Hurley then worked in the non-profit sector in Connecticut and New York. He was an avid fan of both the New York Giants and San Francisco Giants who enjoyed playing rotisserie baseball with many of his longtime, dear friends. He was a voracious reader and enjoyed doing the New York Times crossword puzzle daily. He has been a resident of Weston, CT for 22 years. He made history as Weston's first male kindergarten Class Mom, causing the position to be renamed "Class Parent." An active school volunteer, he also coached boys' rec basketball and girls' middle school softball. He served as President of Weston Swimming, founding coach of the middle school debate team and, informally, Cheerleader-in-Chief of the Weston High School field hockey team. Mr. Hurley was a truly outstanding father, and he shared his love and contagious laughter with many Weston families. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ina Werdinger-Hurley, and daughter Shana Hurley; his brother Dan Hurley, sister-in-law Jan and niece Anna of Woodbridge, NJ; brother John Hurley and sister-in-law Rudi of Chicago, IL; brother-in-law Jeffrey Werdinger of New York, NJ; and his loving cousins Jim, Janet and Tom Muprhy and Denise Templehof of Budd Lake, NJ; as well as the many others he loved. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, August 10th at the Quaker Meeting House (317 New Canaan Rd., Wilton). All are invited to attend. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in his memoriam to St. Benedict's Prep (Newark, NJ) and/or the Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital (Norwalk, CT).
