Obituary of Carolyn Holmes Neumann
Carolyn Holmes Neumann, 90 January 4, 1924 – July 10, 2014 Carolyn Neumann, 90, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2014 Carolyn's lifelong adventures began when she was born on her mother's kitchen table in Orange NJ on January 4, 1924, daughter of Caroline and William Holmes. She was a graduate of the College of St. Elizabeth and shortly after moved to New York to begin a career in radio station management. First in her family to fly on an airplane, she flew to Dallas on assignment, which is where she met her future husband, Roy. They were married in St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York in 1951 and the ensuing years were spent raising a family in Darien, CT. They later retired to Naples, FL. Carolyn and Roy travelled extensively to all corners of the globe, collecting many objects, pictures, and memories. Taking up golf after raising her family, Carolyn nailed a hole-in-one at Darien Country Club. She later enjoyed the weekly putting competitions in her retirement residence of Tower Pointe. An ardent Mets fan, she rarely missed a game and gleefully cheered the team on during her final days in the hospital. Most important to Carolyn was a commitment to church and community. In Connecticut, she was an active member of St. John Parish and an organizer of New Covenant House, a soup kitchen in Stamford. In Florida she was a supporter and volunteer for youth literacy, especially among disadvantaged children in Collier County. She carried on her passion for reading by tutoring immigrant children as well as being the librarian in her local retirement community. Both Carolyn and Roy were avid boosters of volunteerism and they established a fund to recognize community volunteers in Collier County. Carolyn was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Margaret, and her husband, Roy. She is survived by her sister Virginia Stephens of Meredith, NH, her four children: Gregory Neumann and his wife Sue of Greenwich CT; Heidi Hansen of Cape Elizabeth ME; Marlene Macfarlane and her husband Scott of Manlius NY; Elizabeth Neumann and her partner Sue of Boulder CO, and 6 granddaughters. A Funeral Mass will be held on July 14 at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Greenwich, CT at 11:00 am. A memorial service and internment will be held in August. Memorial Gifts may be sent to: New Covenant House of Hospitality 90 Fairfield Avenue Stamford, CT 06904 or The Roy and Carolyn Neumann Volunteer Fund Community Foundation of Collier County 2400 North Tamiami Trail, Suite 300 Naples, FL 34103 Read Carolyn Neumann's Obituary and Guestbook on nutmegcremation.com.
