I was a staff member in the Department of French and Italian in the late 1970's. Tilde was the most delightful person. She treated staff as equals and got to know us individually and took an interest in our lives. Every time I drive by Central Park Avenue in Evanston I think of several department events she hosted and was, of course, the epitome of graciousness. I was sad to hear of her daughter's passing but moved to read another daughter's moving memoir of the family grief. Peace to her memory. Wayne MacPherson

To the Sankovitch family, I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Professor Sankovitch. She was an amazing professor and I was incredibly lucky to spend extra time with her during my senior year at Northwestern in 1995-1996 when she very kindly agreed to act as the adviser for my honors thesis on the role of the law in medieval French literature. I will never forget her warmth, passion, kindness and generosity which all had a profound impact on my life. Please know that you all are in my thoughts. Very truly yours, Anne McKinley

Oh, I was so sad to read of Professor Sankovitch’s passing in Northwestern’s alumni magazine. But I was also so pleased to read about how rich a life she lived, and how loved she was by so many. I remember as one of my very favorite teachers from my years at Northwestern (Class of ‘79). And one of my favorite memories from Northwestern was her patience and what appeared to be delight (but in retrospect, may have been camouflaged astonishment) at my mangling of the French language. At one point she burst out laughing (sweetly) when instead of describing myself washing my hair in the bathtub I said I had washed my horse in the bathtub. She taught me how to view my own mistakes as humorous and not to take myself too seriously. What a lovely woman. Denise Madigan
