I met Jean while I visited my grandmother at Waveny. Jean was very outgoing, and she jested with staff and residents alike.
I appreciated Jean because she would reach out to my grandma. My grandma grew up in Brooklyn, and Jean brought the city back to her memory. It felt reassuring to know she was a friend to my grandmother. Jean's good nature was contagious, and it brightened those lucky enough to be around her.
When I realized that she was Mama Jean, it became a blessing to meet her. Though not all heroes are who you imagine, Jean surpassed any idea I had of the Pride March pioneers. Here was a person who rang true, so effortlessly authentic and inspiring.
To see her smile when she was with Evelyn, you knew they had love. I wish her surviving family every kindness.

I am sorry for your loss.
We were together during the stonewall riots and pride parade and festival. Wonderful times
I hope she finds peace .

I'll never forget the 1st time I saw Jean. It was at one of my 1st GAA meetings. Jean was coming from Riis Park where she was captain of the baseball team. She was wearing khaki shorts, aa tee shirt, a baseball cap...and she was carrying a regulation baseball bat! Everyone at the meeting greeted her "Hey, Mama Jean!" I knew right away that she and I had to be friends. Edward Sherman
