Obituary of Herbert Wexler

Herbert (“Herb”) Wexler died peacefully on October 6, 2018 in Norwalk, CT at the age of 63.
 

     Herb is survived by his life partner and main squeeze Kay Phelan, his sister, Amy Wexler, his niece, Wren Nilla, and many dear, dear friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jerome and Gwen Wexler.

     Herb was born on January 21, 1955 in Wallingford, CT. He grew up in Wallingford and graduated from Sheehan High School in 1973. In 1978, he graduated from Hesser College, located in New Hampshire, with an Associates Degree in Computer Science. He graduated from Albertus Magnus College, located in New Haven, CT, in 2000 with a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science and from University of Connecticut (Stamford branch) in 2007 with a Masters Degree in Business Administration.      Athlete, deep thinker and business man, Herb sat on the board of Sound Cyclists Bike Club (SCBC) of Fairfield County, was on the steering committee of the Humanist and Free Thinkers of Fairfield County, and did “desk duty” for SCORE, a non-profit business mentorship network.

      Herb was in perpetual motion: biking to the start of sound cyclist bike rides, walking dogs, or baking carrot cake. He wasn’t much of a swimmer and after his first sprint triathlon he said in shock, “that was the first time I continuously swam a 1/2 mile!” Herb could be counted on to not only participate in but also help organize and run athletic events. Herb’s closet was full of tee shirts from the Connecticut Challenge, Spin Odyssey, Bloomin’ Metric, Mossman Triathlon and numerous 5K’s. 

     After breaking free from The Way ministry in 1982, Herb moved to Stamford and lived across the hall from a woman named Sue. Sue, an office manager, complained to Herb about the medical software of the time.    Herb listened.   With the help of a few partners, time, and sweat equity, he created the medical billing software MicroEdge, acquired by WebMD in 2000. Herb’s true passion was learning about businesses from the inside out. This interest led him to continue his entrepreneurial career, establishing The Next Edge in 2007. Three years later he began working with ZoHo, a platform for cloud-based computing solutions. He quickly realized both his own and Zoho’s potential for global reach, and Herb became a subject matter expert on this software. He loved that his commute was his hallway and that he could impact companies globally from his home office in Norwalk, Connecticut.   His business helped people all over the world, from bee keepers in New Zealand to special needs children in England. Though Herb was an international business consultant it was equally if not more important to be known as a trusted dog walker,  steady-paced “D” ride leader, and authentic kind friend. Herb’s mission in life was to have a positive impact. Mission accomplished.

     A memorial service is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on October 21, 2018 at the Norwalk Inn located at 99 East Avenue, Norwalk, CT, 06851.  Refreshments will follow.  All are welcome to attend and celebrate Herb’s life.
