Dick was one tough man; he loved his family, his westerns, his dog, and his lunches at the club, in that order. Godspeed.

Richard Clow Memhard, Investment Banker, entrepreneur, and lifelong sailor, died peacefully at home on October 6th with loving family and friends nearby.
Born in New York City in 1930, Dick grew up in Riverside, Connecticut, attending Riverside Elementary School, Rye Country Day, Phillips Exeter Academy, and Yale University, where he studied engineering and majored in English, graduating with honors in 1951.
Richard met Polly Ann Hunter, a senior at Wellesley College, in November 1951 at a dance and quickly swept her off her feet. They were married the following spring on April 5, 1952 in Farmington, Connecticut before Dick went on to serve, first in the fledgling Central Intelligence Agency, and then as a US Naval Gunnery Officer on a destroyer stationed in Norfolk, Virginia and then deployed to Korea.
After his Honorable Discharge from the Navy in 1954, Dick and Polly drove West, settling in San Francisco, California where Dick began a career in finance and enrolled in a Masters of Business Administration program at Golden Gate College. While in San Francisco, Dick’s first two children were born; Raymond Scott and Laura. They returned to Riverside, Connecticut in 1957 where their third child, Jennifer was born.
Working in New York City, Dick transitioned from commercial banking to Wall Street investment banking, becoming a partner of Hornblower & Weeks - Hemphill, Noyes and later G.H.Walker & Co.
Then, using his experience with mergers and acquisitions, and skill in communications and complex financial projections, "RCM" launched his career as an entrepreneur, founding Memhard Investment Bankers, Inc. which he managed from 1973 to 2016. Among the many companies Dick organized financing to acquire and grow are SRS Crisafulli, Inc., Glendive, Montana, and Cape Pond Ice Company, Inc., Gloucester, Massachusetts - both still managed by family members.
Beyond Dick’s career accomplishments, he had a life-long passion for sailing, from instructing in Dyer Dinghies, to racing competitively at the Riverside Yacht Club, Block Island and Newport, and sailing with family and friends all along the East Coast down to the Bahamas. His vessels included Quincy Adams class “Lady Luck”, Nautor Swans “Kinship” and “Kinship II”, and Able Apogee 50 “Independence”.
But first and foremost, Dick was the captain of the beautiful family he made, advocating for his wife and each of their children and grandchildren, to push boundaries, be curious, and grow, while acting with integrity and grace.
Dick’s parents were Allen Raymond Memhard and Judith Memhard Falconer. His older brother, Allen Memhard, his sisters, Priscilla Memhard Bryant and Beatrice Memhard Brittain, and his younger brother, Charles Pomeroy Memhard all pre-deceased him.
He is survived by his wife Polly and their three children: Raymond Scott Memhard, of Gloucester, Massachusetts, Laura Memhard Fleming, of Ridgefield, Connecticut, and Jennifer Memhard, of Portland, Oregon., and their spouses and partners. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Aldace Winslow Fleming, Laura Elizabeth Fleming, Ian Richard Oaks Memhard, Lawrence Hart Oaks Memhard and Marie Memhard Cahoon, and one great-grandchild, Eleanor Faye Cahoon.
Richard Clow Memhard, may he rest in peace, will be missed by many. A celebration of his life will be held Friday, November 3, at 1:30 p.m. at the Riverside Yacht Club. In lieu of flowers or food, Dick’s family ask that he be remembered by acts of kindness, courage, and investment in the survival of this beautiful planet.
