Obituary of Elizabeth Ann Doran
Elizabeth A. Doran
Betsy Doran passed away March 11, 2017 in Greenwich, CT at the age of 88. Betsy was born Jan 7, 1929 in East Orange NJ the daughter of the late Ed and Betty Toomy. Growing up in Old Greenwich, she graduated from Sacred Heart Academy and The Merrill Business School. After a short career in NYC, Betsy married Jack Doran and raised five boys- the last two twins! After a few years in Philadelphia the young family returned to their roots in Greenwich and lived for three years in the Mansion at Tod’s. In 1961 Betsy and family moved to and remained in Riverside for over 50 years. Tod’s Point was a love of Betsy’s her whole life and pretty much raised the boys at the beach for which they will always be grateful.
Betsy became a Certified Alcohol Counselor and worked for many years at Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan helping patients with addiction issues until retiring. Betsy worked creating international dialogue amongst ordinary citizens to promote cross-cultural exchanges around addiction issues working with the Center for Citizen Diplomacy at Wainwright House. She also served on the Executive Committee of the Soviet/American Conference on Alcoholism in the late 80s and traveled to Moscow.
Betsy was a world traveler centered on her love of the wonders of the natural world from whale watching trips in Alaska to safaris in Africa to island expeditions to the Galapagos Islands and the Seychelles. Her photos of her travels won numerous local art show awards. Betsy volunteered for the Art Society of Old Greenwich, Friends of Tod’s Point and the Rummage Room in Old Greenwich. Another lifelong interest was tennis and she was an active player almost her whole life and definitely a fan for all of it.
Betsy was pre-deceased by her sons Rick and Jeff and husband Jack. She is survived by her sons David, Mark and Peter, her grandsons Cody, Ranger, Matt and Patrick and her sisters Peggy, Fran and Ginny.
Betsy laughed with many, was beloved by many and will be missed by many.
A celebration of life party will be held at a future date. Memorial contributions should be sent to the Alzheimer's Association.
