John Sampas was a good friend of my late father, Bob Welch, a poet/novelist who used the pseudonym Salmon Ryder and was heavily influenced by Jack Kerouac and the other Beat writers. For a long time John was one of the few people still alive who knew my parents in the early days of their marriage when they lived in a tiny apartment in Greenwich Village (where I was born). I am very sorry to see him go.
