A surprise from the past.... Dear Grahams, I send you deep condolences, and I am glad he was alert and not in pain til the end. I was impressed when he started the Big Band, not only for bringing back the great music, but for sharing his talent, and giving himself that fulfillment. Little did I know I would later become an avid swing dancer! I too am grateful for many summers at Madison....such a perfectly beautiful spot. I like the letter he sent your Mom about it. I often miss her. And how about that photo in his whites! …I live outside Boston with my 15 year old son (took me awhile) and I remember fondly the years I had with you, my other family. Bless you Walter, for all the time and devotion you put in, and you Bill for the postings. Many Blessings to you all, and moments of Peace.

To the Graham Family - We were so sorry to hear of the loss of your dear father. Annie and I remember with fondness both of your parents. They were always very kind to us. We have wonderful memories of Madison and running between the houses being careful of the flower beds, as well as your mom and tennis and your dad boating and enjoying music. I am sorry to share with you that dad (Jim Strong) died on the 23rd of December. I learned of your Dad's death from Susan Reilly posting a message of condolence to us on the Hartford Courant website and Susan's mother died the same day as Dad. Hard to believe the three of them all neighbors on Seaview Beach would die at the same time. God bless them - they gave us wondeful memories. Thank you for sharing them with us. Our condolences too on David's passing - he always had a smile for us and we most recently saw him for Aunt Sue's 90th birthday celebration in Madison, August 2011. We remember your family always with affection. Love, Jane (Strong) May and Ann (Strong) O'Connor

From Vicki and Bill Littell, neighbors and long time family friends
Dear Bob, Bill, Walter and Dorothy,
No one who knew Owen will ever forget him. He lived a good long life filled with fun, music and great gusto! I remember his 'Aristocrats' playing at MBC on Friday nights. I remember how much he loved Kelly and to all of you in the late 1970's. May the sweet memories return to you all!

From Barbara Kennard, niece to Barbara Kennard Graham, Owen's wife and the mother if his 5 kids.
I recall with much delight the many times my brother, Douglas, and I spent with our Graham cousins: family dinners at Overlook Road, dance concerts in the basement ( yea yea yea!) and the too many to count weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and deaths we all celebrated or observed together. When I think of these times, I see the twinkle in Uncle Owen's eyes and can hear his infectious laughter. He was a gracious and personable man and enjoyed having all of us around, no matter how much mischief we got up to. ( granny's laundry shoot!) We were all so blessed to grow-up in the warmth and love of our parents, grandparents, and aunts and uncles. Owen and his contemporaries, including my father, Uncle Dick and Uncle Frank ( still with us at 91) were/are part of that "greatest generation". We are blessed to know and to have been raised by them. Rest in Peace, Uncle Owen.

So sorry for the loss of your Dad. At his best, he was a symbol of all that was good about his generation.

We have a letter Owen wrote 4 April 1945 to his future wife, Barbara Kennard (BK), while at sea in the Pacific preparing to invade Japan, which includes this PS:
"The family bought the cottage at Madison. They sent a memo on all the alterations they plan to make - how about devoting a few weekends up there with them next year painting, cleaning up, swimming, dancing - and clamming in our "front yard"?
Dad and BK were married Sept 21, 1946.
Times at Seaview were among the most precious they shared.

Remember the Good Times (Bill G)
Thanks to all those who have already expressed their condolences on Dad's passing. He was living an independent life and enjoying himself through much of last month. An infection was being treated without much luck and he was sent to Yale New Haven, where they got rid of the infection. But the ravages of age led to a deterioration of his health. Consistent with his wishes, the kids acted on the doctors' suggestion to move him to Hospice. Branford did a great job with his care and he first complained of pain three days ago. He had a long and fruitful life and only a short illness. Among his last remarks to Alicia Schaaf and me on our visit 12/21 was for us to 'remember the good times'. He voiced that he knew he was dying. He was positive in outlook and appreciative of the visit and those helping him. I got to feed him some ice cream, which was always one of his favorite midnight snacks. The family is especially thankful for Walt for all his time and travel from Rochester and love in moving Dad to the Hearth and setting up his apartment, and dealing with these recent matters. Please feel free to post a remembrance of Dad here to share with others.
