Obituary of Marilyn Atkin

Marilyn Zoty Atkin passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, in her Norwalk home on May 5, 2015. Marilyn's sardonic humor – or as she might have it, her propensity for "the truth" – will be deeply missed by family and friends. Marilyn was born in New York City on May 28, 1924 and grew up in New York City and Chicago. She studied at Northwestern University before returning to New York where she met her husband, William Wilson Atkin, and later moving the family to Norwalk in 1955. After raising her family she worked for Save the Children Federation Inc. as a development officer, including travelling extensively to Native American reservations. She retired in 1988, but continued to be very active with the Wilton Society of Friends (Quakers) and volunteered with Lifetime Learners at Norwalk Community College and the Democratic Party. She was an avid tennis player who served on the Roton Point Club board for many years and loved communicating with her grandchildren about their various pursuits. A natural wordsmith, Marilyn took up poetry in her later years, could complete a NY Times crossword puzzle quicker than anyone, and was reportedly undefeated in Scrabble. Marilyn was predeceased by her loving husband William of 26 years in 1976. She is survived by her four children, John (Marina Thomas), Ethan (Susan Ritz), Evelyn Dahm (Frank Dahm), and Paul; as well as her six adoring grandchildren: Adley, Kendra, Caroline, Will, Katherine, and Victoria. She is also survived by her sister Jacqueline Toman Bridgwater of Argenton-sur-Creuse, France; predeceased by a sister, Alice Kako; and much loved by Colleen Hains and Charyn Segal Atkin. She will be sorely missed. Marilyn's life will be celebrated at the Wilton Friends Meeting, 317 New Canaan Road (Route 106) in Wilton, Connecticut on June 13, 2015 at 10 AM, followed by a gathering at her home at 12 noon, 39 Comstock Hill Avenue, Norwalk. Friends are welcome to either or both celebrations. The family asks that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Marilyn Atkin Memorial Tribute at Save the Children Federation Inc., 501 Kings Highway East, Suite 400, Fairfield, CT 06825 or online at: https://secure.savethechildren.org/site/c.8rKLIXMGIpI4E/b.6238339/k.A96/Honor_a_Loved_Ones_Legacy_with_a_Memorial_Donation/apps/ka/sd/donor.asp.
