Understanding the Cremation Process
Despite its rising popularity, cremations are still a mystery to most people. They don’t know what’s involved in the process, how to make arrangements for it, and if there are any special considerations they must keep in mind. At Nutmeg State Cremation Society, we make sure clients have all the information they need regarding cremation so they can make decisions based on facts. Here’s a look at the cremation process:
1. Directly after the Death
Family members inform the funeral home of the death when they’re ready to transport the body. In the event of a pre-planned funeral, all arrangements are already finalized so there’s nothing left to discuss. If the funeral isn’t pre-planned, the director explains everything that is involved, including permits, paperwork, death certificates, medical examinations, etc. The funeral home will make all of these arrangements after they are informed. They will then transport the body to the funeral home location to prepare.
2. Preparing the Body
After all the paperwork is done and the waiting period recommended by a medical examiner is over, the funeral home will prepare the body. They will remove all jewelry, clean the body, and embalm it if the family members request it. Embalming isn’t necessary for cremations unless you want to hold a memorial service and have the body present during it.
3. Cremation
Once the body is prepared, it is put in a special casket before being placed inside the cremation chamber. It takes a few hours for the body to be cremated completely. Once it is done, the cremation chamber operator will remove any metal objects like surgical pins or needles from the cremation chamber. The remaining bones are ground to ashes and placed inside an urn, which is then handed over to the family.
