How to Cope With the Loss of a Loved One During the Holiday Season
There are few things in life that are as painful as the loss of a loved one or a close family member. This pain can linger for months and can reemerge even after years of healing. When people leave our lives, the feeling of their absence never really goes away, it just becomes less intense and noticeable over time. Unfortunately, certain things can bring that feeling of loss back to the surface and the holiday season is one of those things. Here are some tips and suggestions that can help you get through this time a little bit easier:
1. Take a trip away from familiar surroundings
Your home and neighborhood can serve as a constant reminder of the loss, especially during the holiday season. People will try to invite you to parties and keep you engaged with good intentions but this can cause a lot of stress. That’s one of the reasons why it’s a good idea to take a break away from familiar surroundings and explore new places. Travel to warmer regions, explore beaches, go for a long drive, etc. Traveling is a great way to take a break and focus on healing.
2. Learn to say no
People often give in and accept party invitations even though they don’t have any obligation to. Learn to say no if you’re not in the right mindset to face crowds or celebrate the holiday season. Friends and family will understand and most will give you some space to heal at a steady pace.
3. Talk to others
Sometimes talking to people not connected to the loss can help you recover. Talk to a friend or partner about your loss and share your memories. This can be helpful, especially during the holiday season.
