Creative Ideas for Funeral Services

Many people think that funeral services have to be boring, dull, drab affairs. While this may have been the case a few generations ago, the world has realized relatively recently that a funeral doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. Nowadays, a service is a time to remember the good times that you shared with friends or family who have recently passed away. There are plenty of ways to dress things up and keep the attendees engaged without taking away from the gravity of the situation. It can be a bit of a balancing act to make sure that your creative additions don’t interrupt the service itself, but, if done right, it can make for an unforgettable service that you will be proud of. Honouring friends and family should be a happy time, after all. We have a few ideas for you to help get the ball rolling and are more than happy to share them with you. Remember that these are only guidelines and that you can choose a completely different tack if you want. A funeral service is supposed to be individual and speak to the memory of the deceased, so you should absolutely make a choice that feels best to you

Decorations & Flowers

Adding your own decorations or flower arrangements to spruce things up is a cheap and cheerful way to do so. While flowers can add up, decorations allow for unparalleled versatility and help you really make the place feel the way you like. Streamers or ribbons, done well, add a touch of colour without distracting from the ceremony. They also allow you to cordon off areas or help keep attendees in certain, central areas. If some of your guests don’t know each other this is a great way to make anyone feel like they’re welcome and very much a part of the central group.

Audience Participation

When it comes to the actual service, audience participation isn’t usually considered. Many people treat a funeral service like a very sombre church service, but there are so many more options available. Handing out candles, flower petals, or other items to be placed in a designated area as guests arrive or leave can go a long way to making them feel like they personally contributed and helps give them a sense of accomplishment and community, leading to a greater sense of peace after a hard loss.

Memorials/Shrines

These go hand in hand with audience participation and are also a beautiful visual representation of the love and friendship that attendees feel toward those we have recently lost. Informing attendees that they are free to bring a fitting addition if they so choose is a very touching sentiment. On top of being welcoming and friendly, this also sets the stage for continuing remembrances and memorials, which will ultimately help us get through the grieving process and start healing sooner.

Keep it Unique

Above all else, your funeral service should speak to you and your loved ones. Every decision is up to you and we know that you’ll have no worries when deciding how best to present and decorate the service. Making people feel like they are a part of the ceremony goes a long way, but if you prefer tradition we wholeheartedly support that choice, too.

We hope that these suggestions have been a help and invite you to get in touch with us here at Nutmeg State Cremation Society if you have any further questions or need any additional creative ideas.
