How to Plan a Celebration of Life if No Instructions Were Given.
Losing a loved one can be unexpected and shocking for most and we all experience grief in our own ways. However, planning a celebration of life can be a daunting task whilst going through the grieving process, especially when no plans were made in advance. It’s hard to reflect on their life and think of what they may have wanted for their celebration of life, when you are overcome with sadness. But it is important to focus on exactly what the name ‘celebration of life’ stands for, it is a celebration of the life that the deceased had, while being connected, comforting, and supportive for everyone that loved them.
Consider Their Interests
A celebration of life is an opportunity to showcase the life that the deceased loved, and the primary focuses there is on their own interests and hobbies, what made them happy. It is important to incorporate their hobbies and interest to personalize the service. In some cases, people create memory boards or walls or even in some cases slide shows, to show people a different side to your passed loved one. For example, if your loved one was a music lover, including their favourite type of music at the service is a create way to personalize it or by posting pictures of them at their favourite concert you are demonstrating their interests. Another thing you can focus on is some of their past achievements, for examples if they were a military veteran you could have their medals on display.
Seek Help and Support
It is important when planning a celebration to have the active involvement and participation of close family and friends during the planning process, because it is fundamental to bringing everyone together and helping each other heal through the process. Before the service, try to connect with friends and family, and by even asking them to submit pictures, they feel like they have an active involvement in the celebration. It will also help them at the service, to see some familiar pictures and memories that they experienced with the deceased will help them remember the fond memories that they shared.
How Will You Know you are Doing It Right?
We understand that planning a celebration of life with no instructions can be a very stressful and emotional time. There are no rights and wrongs when it comes to the celebration, and that is important to remember. Just reflect on if you have showcased your loved one in all the positive light and that’s the most important part. Respect the life they lived, and remember that it is what matters.
