Celebration Of Life vs. Funerals

Traditional funerals have always followed a formula; they typically consist of the same tired prayers, eulogies, hymns, etc. Funeral services are meant to comfort grieving loved ones, but this rarely happens.

Celebrations of life are becoming increasingly popular as a way to give a funeral ceremony more depth and meaning for grieving loved ones. This is a beautiful and comforting tribute to the deceased and a true reflection of their life.

The Difference Between Celebration of Life vs. Funerals

A funeral is very different from a life celebration in many ways, including:

  • Atmosphere and mood at the event
  • Whether or not the decedent’s body is present
  • The events that occur and the process of the event
  • The location where this event is held

Characteristics of a Celebration of Life

  • The solemnity of a funeral isn't present at a celebration of life.
  • It can be done any time, whether a few days before the debt is due, a week or month later, or even years later.
  • Although this is a religious ceremony, no traditional funeral rites will be observed.
  • Rather than a traditional religious leader, a celebrant (typically a close family member or friend) leads the ceremony.
  • The purpose of a funeral or celebration of life is to remember and pay tribute to the deceased, tell stories and share happy memories of the deceased.

The simple truth is that there are no hard and fast rules about how a funeral or memorial service should be held.
