The commemoration of the dead is a deeply personal and cultural activity, and each nation has its unique traditions for doing so. There are various ways to pay respects to the departed, including casket burials, cremation, and spreading the ashes at sea. At Nutmeg State Cremation Society we know that creating a memorial is yet another unique way to remember the departed.

Unique Memorials

This represents the individual's impact on society as a result of their actions. It is not uncommon for memorials to be erected in honor of more than one person. Here we examine some unique memorials in the world:

  • The Motherland Calls- This massive and impressive memorial stands on Mamayev Kurgan, a hill in Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad, Russia). In 1967, it was constructed as a memorial to the heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad. When it was completed, its 279 feet of height made it the tallest building in the world. This statue was modeled by Valentina Izotova, a resident of Stalingrad.
  • The Marasesti Heroes Mausoleum- Located in Romania, this memorial was built to honor the brave Romanians who died in the Battle of Marasesti. There were about 24,000 Romanian casualties in the First World War, and this monument was created on the site.
  • The Heroes of the Ghetto Square- This memorial can be found in Kraków, Poland. It was the first major uprising against the Nazis, and it is remembered today. Having been completed in the wake of the Jewish Ghetto Uprising of 1943, it was finally revealed that year.
  • The Marine Corps War Memorial- This bronze monument can be seen in Virginia, near Rosslyn, home to Arlington National Cemetery. It was built in remembrance of the Marines who gave their life defending America on November 10, 1775.
