5 Funeral Etiquette Tips You Need To Know

At Nutmeg State Cremation Society, we have seen that attending a funeral can be difficult for many people. While it’s a way to show support to the family of the deceased and to say goodbye to the departed soul, some aren’t sure how they should offer their condolences.

Some Funeral Etiquette Tips

Here are five funeral etiquette tips you need to know:

  • It is imperative that you are properly dressed. The traditional funeral attire is formal wear, which you should aim to adhere to. Attending a funeral in casual attire, such as jeans and a T-shirt, is inappropriate and insensitive. If you do not want to wear formal clothes, make an effort to wear something solemn and in muted colors.

  • Arrive at the funeral service venue a bit early. Arriving late will interrupt the ceremony and reflect poorly on you. Consider factors such as traffic and arrive at the site a few minutes before the specified time.

  • Make sure that none of your mobile devices are left turned and are on silent.  When attending the funeral, do not read or write messages. If you need to take an urgent call, leave the room quietly and attend to it outside.

  • Be mindful of your words while offering condolences to the mourning family. While it is important to comfort the bereaved with kind words, you must also show your support respectfully, without doing something that is offensive or humiliating to them.

  • Flowers are a good way to show your respect for the decedent and condolences to the family. However, it’s crucial to pick the right types of flowers such as lilies, daisies, chrysanthemums, carnations, gladioli, etc.

At Nutmeg State Cremation Society, we provide comprehensive pre-planning funeral services and can help you with all aspects of the process.
