How to Write an Obituary

An obituary is a notice that informs everyone about a loved one’s passing. It is an old practice from a world that wasn’t as connected and people in a community were invested in each other. At the Nutmeg State Cremation Society, we believe obituaries are still relevant and can help family members convey the news to connections they may not be aware of. Here are some tips on how to write a good obituary:

1. Include Basic Information

The first thing to do is include all the basic information in the notice. This ensures there's no room for misidentification or errors. The basic information can include:

  • Name and age
  • Time and place of birth
  • Time and place of death
  • Place of residence
  • Name of wife and children
  • Name of parents and siblings
  • Profession

This basic information ensures the deceased’s identity is clear and everyone knows who you’re talking about.

2. Add a Brief Summary of their Life

If you only include the basic details, the obituary will come across as impersonal. A short snippet about the person’s life, personality, contributions towards the society, charity work, etc, can help make the announcement much more personal. It will show people just what kind of person the deceased was and help the family heal a little. Some family members also add funny comments or memories to obituaries to make things more personal.

3. Funeral Details

The obituary should include details about funeral services, memorial services, or wakes. It can be an open invitation for unknown connections to visit and pay their last respects. You should also include the name and contact information of the funeral provider in case people want to send their condolence messages.

At Nutmeg State Cremation Society, we provide comprehensive funeral services and can help you with all aspects of the process so if you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact us.
